Tree Care Built for Historic Properties

Working in DeLand's Historic District requires more than standard tree service skills. We bring the right equipment, proper techniques, and sensitivity to every job — protecting both your trees and the historic character of your property.

Heritage Tree Preservation Trimming

Precision crown-cleaning and structural pruning that extends the life of mature live oaks, pecans, and other historic specimen trees without compromising their natural canopy form.

Preservation-First Pruning

We follow ANSI A300 pruning standards for heritage trees — no flush cuts, no topping, no lion's-tailing. Every cut is made to encourage health and longevity, not just appearance.

Careful Historic Tree Removal

When a heritage tree must come down — due to disease, hazard, or storm damage — we use section-by-section removal techniques to protect historic structures, fences, and surrounding landscaping.

Stump Grinding (Landscape-Sensitive)

Our compact stump grinding equipment operates in tight spaces on historic lots without disturbing root systems of neighboring trees, period fencing, or established garden beds.

Hazardous Tree Assessment

Old trees can develop hidden decay and structural weaknesses. We identify risk factors early and recommend the least-invasive intervention that keeps your property safe.

Storm Damage Cleanup

After a storm, we respond quickly to secure and clean up historic properties — removing fallen limbs and debris while protecting intact canopy structure wherever possible.

Heritage Tree Species

DeLand's Signature Trees — and How to Care for Them

The live oaks and pecans lining DeLand's historic streets and lots are part of what makes the district special. Here's what proper care looks like for each species.

Massive Southern live oak tree with broad spreading canopy draped in Spanish moss

Southern Live Oak (Quercus virginiana)

  • Prune only during the dormant season (late fall through winter) to minimize oak wilt risk
  • Remove only dead, diseased, or structurally hazardous limbs — never top
  • Preserve the natural low, spreading form that defines historic streetscapes
  • Treat pruning wounds with approved wound dressings on large-diameter cuts

DeLand's live oaks are irreplaceable — many are 100+ years old. We treat every one with the care a historic specimen deserves.

Tall mature pecan tree with dense leafy canopy on a historic property

Pecan (Carya illinoinensis)

  • Crown-clean annually to remove deadwood and crossing branches that create decay entry points
  • Maintain central leader form to support nut production and structural integrity
  • Avoid heavy pruning during spring flush to reduce scab disease risk
  • Monitor for pecan weevil, pecan nut casebearer, and aphid pressure

Mature pecans are significant assets on historic lots. Proper care keeps them productive and structurally sound for decades more.

Historic District Compliance & Permits

Tree work in DeLand's Historic District isn't just about skill — it's about following the right process. Protected trees may require city permits, and removal of certain specimen trees requires Historic Preservation Commission approval. We handle all of this for you.

  • We coordinate with city staff and obtain required tree removal permits before work begins on protected species
  • All work follows the DeLand Historic Preservation Commission guidelines for landscaping and tree work
  • Heritage and specimen trees identified in the Historic District receive special handling protocols
  • Complete documentation is provided for permit applications and insurance purposes
  • We never remove a protected tree without written authorization from the appropriate authority

What Historic District Property Owners Say

We've earned the trust of homeowners throughout DeLand's Historic District with careful, professional work that respects both trees and properties.

We have two 80-year-old live oaks in our yard in the historic district and we were nervous about finding someone who understood how to care for them properly. Volusia Bobcat & Tree Service was outstanding. They knew exactly what cuts to make and what to leave alone. Our trees look healthier than they have in years.

After the last storm, we had a massive pecan limb down on our historic property. The crew came out the next day, assessed everything carefully, and removed the debris without damaging our period iron fence or the other trees nearby. Clean, professional, and respectful of the property.

We needed a dead oak removed from our historic district property and were worried about permits and the process. They handled everything — the permit application, the careful section-by-section removal, and the cleanup. The stump grinding was done with a compact machine that didn't tear up our lawn. Couldn't ask for better.

Project Spotlight: Historic Property Canopy Restoration

A 1920s craftsman home on North Florida Avenue — live oaks had not been pruned in over 15 years. Overgrown canopy was creating roof damage risk and shading out the understory garden entirely.

Outcome: Structural deadwood removed, canopy raised and thinned to allow airflow and light. Roof clearance restored. Two minor codominant stems corrected with drop-crotch cuts. No landscaping damage. Full cleanup included.
